Book Anger Management for Parents: How to Be Calmer and More Patient With Your Children Review :

As a grandparent, I am over the child-rearing days, but I have three kids raising their own and am always looking out for ways to help them. I know for myself, I didn’t even know I had a temper until I had kids and wondered at the time, “Where in the world did that come from?” It seems that kids can bring out the best and worst in us and they don’t come with a manual, so anything we can learn from another’s experience is gold in my eyes. The author walks us through the different ways to approach parenting for the different age groups including toddlers, the preschool years, school age and even teenagers, and they all require different methods and skills. She talks about the different parenting styles and pros and cons of each. She talks about the importance of creating a united front in front of the kids, otherwise they will try to pit one against the other. They may still do that, but if they know you as parents are united in your decisions, it will be less of an issue. I found this to be true with our own kids. The author explains how to learn the root of our anger, why it’s harmful, and how to let go of it in order to be an effective parent. She looks at strategies, emotions and methods of communication that fosters love, nurturing and a caring environment. One important topic I’m so glad she included was about self-care and how important that is. We all need our own time and fulfillment that in turn will make us better parents because we have taken the time to intentionally take care of ourselves. I appreciated the breathing exercises the author shared and plan to use them right away – a true bonus worth the price of the book!
This book is well thought out and researched which is a helpful guide for parents who need that kind of education. As a mom of a child with ADHD and a mood disorder, I was hoping to find more actual techniques for bridging anger when an irrational child gets the upper hand. When parents of special needs kids have to field their emotions and their child's emotions all day long it can become taxing and perhaps at the end of a long day that parent might break. I was hoping for techniques for those of us who are calm parents when they are at the end of their rope. This is a good guide, though, for anyone who is feeling that parenting, in general, is triggering and gives you some solid methods on how to press the reset button like checking in with your emotional intelligence, taking a breather, and understanding the motivations developmentally of a child's behavior, thus perhaps avoiding your anger with this knowledge.
